Rough cut

This is our rough cut. We initially filmed and put it together and then we filmed again as we were able to see that certain shots did not make sense. We screened our product furthermore in order to receive some feedback so we can improve our film. From our rough cut we found that we need to construct our film in different ways so that we're able to choose the style that we prefer and get a better reaction from our audience.

The first thing that we received feed back on was our logos. Everyone preferred our second logo to the first as they found that it suited the genre where as the first one could potentially be seen as a sci-fi genre. Furthermore, they thought that our first logo presented a spooky atmosphere and it made them feel much more tense. During screening, the sound that is meant to be heard on the first logo glitches out so we must look into why it has done this. In addition to this, we may make a different film production logo so that the audience feel even more tense.

Watching the first part of our film, people felt that we established the setting very nicely. They found that the foliage noises created suspense and they were inclined to watch the next part of the film. In addition to this, our audience found that the contrapuntal music was straight away very effective as it contrasted so much with the scene. We found that other films, such as Insidious, used the pleasant music in order to get a message across.

For the next part our characters start to come onto the screen so they are shown to our audience for the first time. Our audience liked how we established our characters and they liked the cinematography such as point of view and hand held shots to show how unsteady the opening already is. We had a problem with the editing at one point which was the jump cut. This could be a problem as there is one shot of the victim having fallen over to then again another shot of the victim having fallen. We need to think about this if we film again.

Next in our opening, we introduced The Masked Ones. Our audience found that the cinematography; the camera tilting up, made them look intimidating and it was enough to intimidate them. We had a problem in this part where the victim runs of again in a different direction. We should have applied a rule that is somewhat like the 180 degree rule. If we was to do this then it would have stopped confusion for some audience members.

Another improvement for directing which I got was when the victim is running away to show him looking back on The Masked Ones chasing after him this would build some more suspense with in our audience creating more of a vivid, sadistic atmosphere.

Finally for construction we are going to develop our short film in order to make it effective as possible so that the audience are able to feel much more tense and anticipated. We will try the film with the constant ambient sound over it to see if this will intimidate our audience more. We will also make improvements to our production logos so that they are instantly making the audience on edge.

Questionnaires

As a whole everyone rated our rough cut highly. We got mostly 7's and 8's which is a positive market. People thought that the music and sound could be improved and they wanted more sound. As a group we did construct our film opening with sound as well as with the music by itself like our final cut. We found that we preferred the music by itself because it created a lot more tension. Another improvement that we got was the presentation of the characters. If we was to try different presentations such as the female that we considered at the start of this project then we felt that this could be a bit to cliche for a horror film as females tend to be the victim so an audience could find this quite boring. Everyone enjoyed our range of shots such as wide shots and close shots in order to build tension. The location seemed to be a good idea as it really showed the audience how isolated the scene is and that there is no escape for the victim. In our rough cut, the KMG graphic didn't really fit with the genre of our film so we changed it completely so that even during the graphics, the audience are on edge. Our audience also wanted to see the characters more on screen so that they were able to collect more clues as to who these characters were. Over all if we got to take part in this process again I think that we would have thought alot more about the sound firstly and we would have tried and looked into different sound types used with in a horror film. Also from a directing point of view, during filming I feel like I should have thought about typical horror films more and I would have tried a lot more shots from the victims perspective, looking back and forward at obstacles.
