The envelope is the first thing that the audience are introduced to. This gives us a business and professional enigma. Also the audience are able to catch the New York address and the name of the main character, William Hayes. The envelope also looks very professional and we are able to imply that it is from a solicitor and its very important. The second thing we are introduced to as an audience member is the main character. He is wearing smart clothing which suggests that he is part of a professional business. It could be depicting that he is hardworking as he is surrounded by a work atmosphere with a desk and working equipment. He also has a pensive facial expression and this forebodes that he isn't in a good situation, so we instantly empathise with him. Furthermore the actor chosen attracts a female audience. The film is a romantic comedy so it would attract a female audience anyway yet this actor is know for his good looks. The audience would be familiar with him as an actor and they would therefore be more engaged in the film and they certainly would be able to feel sympathy for him at certain points.
The next thing that we are made aware of as an an audience is divorce papers. This makes an audience feel sympathy for the actor as we are made aware of what's actually happening. This is also an enigma as we are now aware of what the story is probably based on. We also are introduced to the name of his to be divorced wife and we instantly already don't like her as we are made to feel sympathy for Ryan Reynolds. The next thing we are made aware of as an audience member is his occupation. There are pictures behind him of particular cereal brands which could suggest that he is part of the advertising industry. Outside, we can also see tall buildings which sets the film for New York even more for us. We also see that his co-worker is very bubbly and happy and congratulating him.
Furthermore, we see him smiling sarcastically which depicts that he isn't that pleased about it and he doesn't like his job. Also we are aware that he is not in a good situation so therefore we sympathise for him further because we know he's not happy.
The New York Setting is further established in this shot and it shows us the scenery and we are now able to see the busy city. Also we see through his non verbal communication that he brightens up which goes with the speech that he's a father and he enjoys going to pick her up from school.
In this shot we are made aware that it is a sunny day as the bright lighting is emphasised. This reflects Ryan Reynolds change of mood which makes the audience able to feel good with him. The lighting reflects onto his face which brings out his smile. 
Here we are made aware that the character is maybe the kind of person that keeps himself to himself as he puts in earphones. Also, the music that he puts on is happy music so this shows that he is content and optimistic.
Finally we are given more clues of the setting of New York such as the Chrysler building, Grand Central Station, Yellow Taxis and certain streets. These are clues that lead us as an audience of the setting and we are familiar with the setting of New York.
