Textual Analysis into The Strangers

Mise-en-scene+ Camera work

Images of modern perfect family homes show that a bad incident could happen to anyone. This makes the audience feel tense. Also the houses are isolated which could depict that no one is around to rescue any one which also makes the audience feel on edge.
The shots of the house are at a low angle pan which depicts that the danger inside the houses overpowers us an an audience member, making us feel intimidated by the houses.

The image of the two children through the smash in a car wind screen shows that there's danger and something bad is going to happen. As an audience we have a paternal instinct to feel worried for the children so using them makes the audience more anticipated as they would be feeling empathy for the children. The children are framed through the smashing of the car wind screen at a very long shot. The very long shot demonstrates how dangerous the crashing of the car is as the children are not going near it. Also the smashed car is the first sign of danger as an audience that we see. A car incident is a grim and tragic way to have died so it is foreshadowing the gritty, realistic terror that may happen later on. This is a focal point and the audience's eyes are instantly drawn to smash and the children other than the car itself showing that the children are targeted.

The children now enter the house. Low key lighting is used to create a tense feeling that something bad has happened. There is also natural lighting that shines through the door which is effective as it creates shadows. This makes the audience feel tense as it shows them walking past and we already are petrified as to what is going to happen to the children. This is a two person long shot. The non verbal communication of the boys show that they are scared entering the house as they are walking very slowly and unsurely. The shot also emphasizes the lighting that is used.

The use of props such as a spinning record is effective as its the only movement with in the house. It makes the audience feel tense as it is broken as it is not playing yet it is still playing which could show that a horrible incident has happened. The fact that it is still moving shows the isolation as no one has stopped the record. This is a close up as it shows most of the record player, it emphasizes how fast it's moving, being the only movement with in the room.

The ring box and rose petals shows that a couple were involved in the incident. Roses are meant to be a sign of love, passion and happiness yet in this case it is the sign of tragedy and murder which makes the audience feel sympathy for who ever the couple is even though we haven't seen them because their marriage is broken before even started.

The setting includes the knife, blood splattered walls and a gun which clearly shows that someone was murdered, making the audience inclined already to find out who or what the murderer is. This is a key aspect of a horror film as we are drawn to continue watching but we are still scared as to the series of events of what could happening and we bring out what ifs and questions.
All of the shots of the objects are generally close ups as then the object is clearly shown and they're able to catch onto any clues and narrative devices that are are being given to them. Whether subtly or clearly.
